Aging and Skin Renewal

Skin naturally renews itself between 28 to 40 days, bringing new, healthy glowing skin cells to the surface. As the aging process typically heightens at the age of 30 which slows down the skin renewal process and incorporate  exfoliation becomes essential to reveal healthy, luminous skin.

Impact of Not Exfoliating Regularly

When dead skin cells start to pile up, your skin starts to look dull, rough and dry. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells by breaking the bonds that glue them together, allowing new cells to surface and giving your daily glow an instant boost.

Exfoliating gives the skin a smooth surface resulting in more a more evened out skin texture and minimize the appearance of discoloration.

If I skip exfoliation, how will it affect my skincare ritual?

Dead skin cells can’t hold moisture or receive any nutrients from your skincare routine, resulting in dull, rough, or congested skin. Exfoliating removes the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresh, soft skin that can easily absorb moisture and nutrients delivered by your products.

Our skin naturally removes dead skin cells but this process can be affected by many factors: sun exposure, aging, hormone fluctuations, and vitamin deficiencies.

Regular exfoliation helps to encourage this natural cell turnover as well as to brighten, soften, and stimulate collagen production.

How to Choose the Best form of Exfoliation for my skin

Whichever method you choose, it's important to note that it's possible to go overboard with exfoliation as you can damage or strip your protective skin barrier leaving it vulnerable to sun damage and other environmental stressors.

There are two main ways to aide your skin in exfoliation: physically or chemically. Both fundamentally achieve the same goal but go about it in different ways.

1) Mechanical exfoliants physically remove dead skin cells using friction and can be composed of rice powder, salt or sugar scrubs, seeds, brushes, and washcloths. Make sure to use gentle exfoliants and only exfoliate 2-3 times a week.

2) Chemical exfoliants depend on acids and enzymes to exfoliate in a form of a mask but can cause some sensitivity depending on tolerance level - always test on a patch of skin.

Here's Why We Love Selva Detox &

Why It's the Ultimate Exfoliating Powerhouse

Selva Detox doubles as a mechanical and a chemical exfoliant - you can switch it up according to your needs or mood!

1) Rice Powder is a gentle scrub incorporated to help remove dead skin cells and truly detox pores - removing excess oil, dirt, makeup, and grime.

Added bonus: Phytic Acid is a compound extracted from rice that acts as a more gentle form of a chemical exfoliant.

2) Honey, banana fruit juice, camu camu, and hibiscus are rich natural sources of AHAs (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids) that gently exfoliate skin without using harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin.
